Best Places to Visit in Mangaluru for Beaches, Temples and Local Culture

The coastal city of Mangaluru (also called Mangalore) has the Arabian Sea on one side and the Western Ghats on the other. On one end of the city is an expansive selection of stunning beaches. On the other end are some of the oldest temples in India, and throughout there is a well-developed local culture. This coastal city features a great variety of seafood, friendly locals, and a laid-back atmosphere.

Mangaluru is an ideal destination for travellers who want both beach and cultural experiences. You can find all the necessary components for a true coastal destination (but without all the chaos associated with the larger coastal destinations). Here are some reasons why Mangaluru is worth your visit.

Beautiful Beaches

Mangaluru’s coastline offers several beaches that stay relatively quiet and perfect for relaxing by the Arabian Sea.

Panambur Beach

The most popular and well-kept beach in Mangaluru is Panambur Beach. Panambur Beach offers numerous activities such as camel rides, jet skiing and beach volleyball. Sunset views from Panambur Beach are beautiful as the sun turns from orange to pink as it disappears into the Arabian Sea. There are many food stalls on Panambur Beach selling local snacks and fresh coconut water.

Tannirbhavi Beach

Tannirbhavi Beach is less crowded than Panambur Beach and has ample opportunities for peace and relaxation. Tannirbhavi Beach features a long expanse of soft sand and gentle waves which are ideal for swimming. Tannirbhavi Beach has a more traditional feel than other popular traveller beaches.

Surathkal Beach

Surathkal Beach is located just outside of Mangaluru and features an impressive lighthouse. Climbing to the top of the lighthouse offers incredible views of the surrounding coastline. The beach at Surathkal is well maintained and features fine black sand which contrasts with the golden sandy beaches found at other traditional tourist destinations.

Ancient Temples

The temples in Mangaluru showcase Coastal Karnataka’s religious architecture and centuries-old traditions.

Mangaladevi Temple

The Mangaladevi temple gave the city its name. An ancient shrine that draws thousands of visitors each year, it is dedicated to the Goddess Mangaladevi. The temple features traditional coastal-style architecture with intricate carvings, offering devotees respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Kadri Manjunath Temple

The Kadri Manjunath Temple probably dates back to the 10th or 11th century and is home to nationally significant bronze sculptures due to their artistic merit. This beautiful temple is situated on a small hilltop surrounded by lush greenery. If you visit during festival season, you will witness how the locals celebrate their faith.

Kudroli Gokarnath Temple

Kudroli Gokarnath Temple, although much newer, is still a stunning example of architectural beauty. The walls of the temple have spectacular carvings, as well as many brightly coloured decorations; it is particularly breathtaking at night when they illuminate the entire building.

Local Culture and Food

Experiencing Mangaluru offers you a unique glimpse into its coastal culture and exceptional seafood traditions.

Fish Market Near the Harbour

The fish market near the harbour shows real coastal life. Early morning visits let you watch fishermen bringing in fresh catches. The energy and colours create brilliant photography opportunities.

Fish Market Near the Port

You can see the true essence of the coastal community through the fish market located near the port. You can witness very early in the morning local fishermen who have just returned from the ocean with fresh fish. There are some amazing photography opportunities because of the vibrant colours and energy of this location.

Coastal Flavours

Mangalorean foods are popular all over India for their coastal flavours. Try the fish curry, kori rotti (chicken served with crispy rice wafers) and neer dosa (thin rice crepes). All of the food is very flavourful, and most dishes feature a spicy flavour profile, but it is all extremely well prepared and delicious.

Planning Your Visit

Sorting out practical details makes your Mangaluru trip smoother and more enjoyable.

Mangaluru is an easy and enjoyable place to spend time if you have taken care of all the minor details before arriving. The months of October through February offer the best overall weather, with warm temperatures and lower levels of humidity. On the contrary, June through September (the monsoon months) will give you rain. Many of the hotels in Mangaluru have beach-facing rooms if you are looking for an ocean view. If you wish to prefer a more central location, you will find yourself near many of the temples and local marketplaces; on the other hand, if you are looking to create that true coastal vacation experience, you should consider staying in one of the many hotels along the coastline of Mangaluru.

Bottom Line

Mangaluru truly has the best combination of beach, temples, and a truly authentic coastal culture. As such, your time spent in Mangaluru will be a mix of relaxation and exploration. You can realistically cover the majority of what Mangaluru has to offer in a two-to-three-day visit without having the need to rush through your visit.
